Renaissance Treasures
In many areas of my life I like both extremes of something and not much in the middle. My jewelry is one area where this is evident. Many of my designs are minimalist, simple clean lines and very modern while the others are vintage in style and are inspired by age, wear and generational history. I was pondering the vintage pieces this morning and remembering where my love for all things old probably came from - my Grandparents - Nana and Poppee Que (ie Wally & Myrtle). They were from Scottish and Chinese heritage and I spent many a school holiday and weekend with them. They took me on vintage and veteran car rallies in their Metz 1913 car and their Austin 7, even picking me up from school sometimes in the Austin.
On every holiday that I ever spent with them there was always several trips to antique and second hand stores - at the time this was not my favourite adventure. Now however I look back and treasure those days and thank them for the ability I now have of appreciating the richness of an object that may have been a part of several generations of lives. Sometimes my search of all things vintage leads to interesting finds, experiences and purchases. My garage contains pedal cars, wagons, vintage snow sleds - you name it I probably have it stored somewhere - even a bank or two of old postal boxes. Fast forwarding to more recent purchases and experiences let me tell you about yesterday. Ella (my six year old daughter) and I ventured out early on Sunday morning to go to a local market. It's has a combination of farmers produce, seafood ( I live by the ocean) and garage sale type venders (Fishermans Road Markets). I came home with a not so old 1950 retro bedside clock that is mint green and quite "cool". Arriving home still early and still the only ones up in our household I'm not sure my international student boarders were all that thrilled with my purchase as no sooner had I walked in the door and placed the clock in the living room did the fact that it had the loudest alarm I've ever heard became apparent to all within a three house radius. "Where's the fire" was heard at least once while I made a quick dash to figure out how to return silence to my house. I'm choosing to believe the clock felt the need to announce it's presence with exuberance in celebration of having a new home and a new story to be told about its existence.
